In the event, neither of them had had to, Claudia thought as the Jaguar pulled smoothly away from the gravelled sweep in front of Farthings Hall three weeks later. She twisted round in her seat to catch a last glimpse of Guy and Rosie, waving and blowing kisses in the small cluster of guests who had attended the quiet wedding reception.
At the end of that day, the first full day Adam had spent with his daughter, after he’d finally left, Guy had said quietly, ‘Adam’s her father, isn’t he?’
‘He told you, then?’ Claudia, clearing the supper things, had swallowed convulsively and her father had shaken his head decisively.
‘No. He hasn’t said anything; he didn’t need to. I think I always knew. What I didn’t know was whether Tony knew. Whether he found out and that was the cause of the erosion of your marriage.’
She’d pulled a chair away from the supper table and sat, doing her best to look relaxed. ‘Tony knew, before he proposed to me. He wanted a family, he said, but he couldn’t father a child. It seemed the best thing to do at the time. I had no idea how to contact Adam—there’d been a misunderstanding...’
She’d let her voice tail away. No way could she let him suspect that her coming marriage to Rosie’s real father was nothing like it seemed.
He’d given her a level look. ‘I’ve got enough confidence in the two of you to know you’ll make your marriage work. There might be difficulties—it can’t be easy for Adam to come to terms with the fact that Tony was around for the first five years of Rosie’s life, and he wasn’t. But you’ll overcome them. I always felt you were made for each other—you were practically inseparable that summer. It was a joy to see.’
Coming at the end of a traumatic day when she’d finally accepted that there was no way she could wriggle out of Adam’s plans for their future, Guy’s knowledge of his granddaughter’s true parentage, his acceptance of it, had come as a huge relief. It was one less thing to worry about. All she had to do now was prevent him finding out that Adam hated her...
Now the Hall slipped out of sight and they were deep in leafy lanes. Claudia turned back in her seat and sighed and Adam said, ‘They’ll be fine, both of them. Amy will see to that.’
Startled by the first hint of warmth or understanding in his voice, Claudia glanced at her husband of less than three hours. He had changed out of the formal dark grey suit he’d worn for the civil ceremony in Plymouth and now looked too gorgeous for his own good in a stone-coloured cashmere sweater which accentuated the olive tones of his skin, the soft darkness of his hair, and thigh-hugging black jeans which did nothing to disguise those narrow hips and endless legs.
She looked quickly away, hating the way her breath caught in her lungs whenever she looked at him, her voice edgy as she stated, ‘I didn’t want this.
